One or more polygon features

The Slice tool helps you cut merged polygons into smaller, more meaningful parts—especially useful after using tools like Magic Wand or Feature Finder, where adjacent features (like tree crowns or rooftops) may have been combined. Use Slice to clean up your map and ensure each feature is counted on its own.

  1. Select your polygon layer or feature from the table of contents or on the map.

  2. From the drawing tools dropdown on the top menu bar, open the slice tool (you can also access with the keyboard shortcut Shift + K, or via the toolbox).

  3. Click once on your map outside the polygon you wish to slice.

  4. Double click to complete the slice line outside the polygon.

  5. Your table of contents will update with the new number of features and their corresponding area.

Slicing and multipart polygons

If your layer contains multipart polygons (i.e. there are more polygons on the map than are listed in the layer in the table of contents), you will first need to Split these polygons into single part features. This article will help you out if you need it.
